From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its boxed set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy in any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.)

First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming to Buffy late, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the hell out of vampires (in Buffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is.

Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon).

Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. On a lesser note, with the boxed set you can watch the fashion transformation of Buffy from mall rat to Prada-wearing, kickboxing diva with enviable highlights. (There was the unfortunate bob of season 2, but it's a forgivable lapse.) At least the storyline merits the transformations: every time Buffy has to end a relationship she cuts her hair, shedding both the pain and her vulnerability.

In addition to the well-wrought teenage emotional landscape, Buffy deftly takes on more universal themes--power, politics, death, morality--as the series matures in seasons 4-6. And apart from a few missteps that haven't aged particularly well ("I Robot" in season 1 comes to mind), most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing. That's about as much as you can ask for any form of entertainment: that it offer an escape from the viewer's workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one's own. --Megan Halverson

Could have been something but wasnt2010-07-281 / 5
This show had all the chances in the world to be good but wasted what it had. It had a great talent in Sarah Michelle Gellar. It had an up and coming director and producer. But when it was put together all that came of it was bad. The stories were awful, the acting was poor (putting it kindly) and the finished product was nothing memorable. It obviously had an agenda that no one wanted to see but pushed week after week. Definately not a life altering show thats for sure. Its not a surprise that the networks (2 of them infact) canceled this show. It only lasted as long as it did because the networks it was on had nothing to replace it with. Otherwise the first season would have been the last. In fact the firts episode would have been its last. The few fans that cling on to this show are misguided ones of little mind. When the best thing about a show is the fact its no longer on the air then you know where it stands>
Excellent Collection2010-07-265 / 5
Excellent collection. If you're on the fence because of the price; this is one of the few box sets that is worth it. First, every episode is there. I personally don't care all that much about bonus features but it has plenty of bonus interviews and commentaries that should satisfy any Buffy fan. Additionally, the packaging is simple - often box sets complicate the packaging in such a way that I'm afraid of scratching or bending a disc getting it in and out of the case - this set makes it simple to quickly find the disc and episode I'm looking for.
Truly deserving of its cult status!2010-07-245 / 5
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the series remains one of my favorite paranormal television series, ever. I received this as a gift not too long ago, and have been re-watching the seasons these past couple of weeks. The show has everything going for it - an ensemble cast of talented actors (especially the spunky and determined Sarah Michelle Gellar as the eponymous heroine), riveting plots, high-paced action sequences, all sorts of dark creatures (and great make-up effects that have withstood the test of time), witty dialogue, and just pure fun!

In this day and age where insipid reality shows dominate prime time television, BTVS is a breath of fresh air, despite being more than a decade old. This collector's set contains the full series, i.e. Seasons 1-7. From its beginnings as a mainly for teens-only supernatural show, the show grows from strength to strength. In Season 1, Buffy reluctantly assumes the mantle of vampire-slayer (and she does slay other demons as well) under the guidance of Watcher Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head). The only friends she has are super smart, nerdy Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and girl-crazy, average guy Xander (Nicholas Brendon). Things become even more complicated when Buffy falls fast and hard for Angel (David Boreanaz), a formerly vicious and evil vampire who has had his soul restored.

The following seasons follow Buffy and her friends and loves as they battle the forces of darkness. The characters all evolve throughout the seasons - Willow falls in love, matures, and finds her talent for the Craft, becoming a powerful witch; Xander is no longer just a comic relief - he too matures, experiences multiple heartaches, and finds his own niche; and of course Buffy - from a lonely teen who falls for the wrong 'guy', she discovers being strong is not confined to merely killing vampires and demons but overcoming her own inner flaws and discovering herself. Season 3 was one of the best in the series in my opinion as the characters are all shown to have their strengths and flaws - duplicity amongst the friends, harboring dark secrets, etc. One of my favorite episodes in Season 3 was "Revelations" as the characters have to deal with their frustrations/ anger/ prejudices, etc. Season 4 was also compelling in terms of plot and characterizations. My favorite seasons were Seasons 1-4, though seasons 5-7 were good as well. I was truly saddened when the series came to an end, but at least fans and new viewers can relive the adventures of Buffy and company through these DVDs!
Buffy the complete series2010-07-194 / 5
It was great to get all the seasons at once. I like it doesn't take up much room. My only problem was the box it came it. It's made of pretty flimsy cardboard and had ripped within a week of getting it.
100% Worthless!2010-06-161 / 5
This show was so so bad. Its a total joke. What good can you say about it? Nothing. You see better acting in a kindergarten play. You see better story ideas in a drunken stuper. Ofcourse its pc agenda makes everyones stomach churn. No wonder it was canceled on 2 seperate occasions. By 2 networks no less. The few fans left are a delusional mentally challenged few. Do yourself a favor and put your hard earned cash somewhere else. Somewhere that has some kind of crediblity that this show hasnt ever had.
