The Invasion tells the story of a mysterious epidemic that alters the behavior of human beings. When a Washington D.C. psychiatrist (Nicole Kidman) discovers the epidemics origins are extraterrestrial she must fight to protect her son who may hold the key to stopping the escalating invasion.Format: DVD HD Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY/MONSTERS & MUTANTS UPC: 012569810365 Manufacturer No: 81036

The Invasion deserves a second chance on DVD. This ambitious sci-fi thriller represents a flawed yet worthy attempt to bring contemporary vitality to Jack Finney's classic science fiction novel, previously filmed as Don Siegel's 1956 classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Philip Kaufman's suspenseful 1978 remake, and Abel Ferrara's highly underrated Body Snatchers from 1994. And while those earlier films are superior in many respects, The Invasion is not without strengths of its own, particularly for those who prefer action and suspense. Unfortunately these strengths were compromised by the unpredictable misfortunes of production: Original director Oliver Hirschbiegel (hired on the strength of Downfall) was eventually replaced by James McTiegue (V for Vendetta), and the Wachowski Brothers (of Matrix trilogy fame) added high-octane action sequences to the original screenplay by David Kajganich. Perhaps the movie had a curse on it (star Nicole Kidman was almost seriously injured in a stunt-car mishap during last-minute reshoots), but it's really just a matter of disparate ingredients that don't always fit together, resulting in a slick-looking film that can't decide if it's a sci-fi mystery, action thriller, or political allegory. It tries too hard to be all things at once.

Despite this, Kidman rises to the occasion with a solid performance as Carol, a Washington, D.C. psychiatrist who's convinced (with the help of costars Daniel Craig and Jeffrey Wright) that a flu-like virus is spreading throughout the population, its alien spores turning victims into soulless "pod people"... only in this case without the pods. The idea is that you'll be fine if you don't fall asleep, and especially if you don't let anyone sneeze or vomit on you. (There's a lot of vomiting; don't say you weren't warned.) With a crashing space shuttle to deliver the alien threat, cute tyke Jackson Bond as Carol's threatened son, and a nod to Kaufman's film with a small role for Veronica Cartwright, The Invasion will surely fare better on DVD than it did in theaters. If nothing else, it proves the timeless relevance of Finney's original premise, which continues to inspire a multitude of variations. --Jeff Shannon

    The "Invasion" not seen around this earth - 4 1/2 stars2008-12-285 / 5
Unappreciated "Invasion" is how I would describe this film. I was not sure what to expect after reading all these negative reviews, and all I can say is that I'm shocked. This movie was much better than expected. It's been a long time since I've seen "Body Snatchers", but I still thought "Invasion" did a pretty good job bowing down to the original. In my opinion, it's a great upgrade for our time. Sure it could have been scarier, but this film was fantastic for what it was, and had a message!

4 1/2 stars. Give it a shot. More people should have checked it out... instead of falling asleep!

Not at all as bad as some describe it!2008-12-213 / 5
It is always brave to make a remake of a classic movie, even more so when there have already been a few. I did see the original 'cult' version which was excellent taking the technology at the time into account and the low budget not the least.

But lets be for real. A lot of younger (and older) people never saw that and for some they do need a couple of known actors in it to even consider a movie and for them this version was not bad at all I think. It was not a monumental movie at all but it did what it tried out to do - entertain while raising an important question about the consequences of the human conscience as we know it.

Was it great and memorable? maybe not but was it meant to be?
    good but predictable movie2008-12-173 / 5
essentially this is an ok movie, well acted but 'cheap' in terms of production. The re-make with donald sutherland is quite superior.but the original still gives me the creeps!!!
Don't fall asleep! Wait, on second thought, go ahead...2008-12-082 / 5
Nicole Kidman has succumbed to her unflinching forehead.

No longer able to wrinkle and bend it to project emotion, Nicole searches out blank-faced roles. As Joanna, she pretended to be a robot in The Stepford Wives and here, as psychiatrist Carol Bennell, she spends much of her time pretending to be an emotionless alien.

The movie can't decide its genre; a mishmash of car chases and clunky dialogue that never manages to be scary. I recommend you watch the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the 1978 remake, Invasion of the Body Snatchers instead.

A more interesting approach in this film would've been to cast Kidman's real life ex-husband, Tom Cruise, as Tucker, the ex-husband who infects Carol with a gross, face-to-face vomiting sequence. Instead, we get Jeremy Northam, who despite a healthy amount of staring and stalking, never exudes the menace necessary to be cast as the main villain.

One last note, this is the first of two movies to star Kidman and Daniel Craig. The other is The Golden Compass, in which her simian counterpart projected a wider range of emotions than she did. The lack of chemistry between these two actors is surprising, especially considering Craig's resurgence in the James Bond franchise.

This was a careful blend of a past event - cash of the space shuttle and the movie, The Body Snatchers. What an awesome film. I basically knew the plot and didn't care. It was an edge of your seat event. I had no idea who was going to live and who'd die until the very end. Rock on awesome!
