Callous hustler Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is busy working on his next deal when he receives word that his estranged father has died. After traveling back to Ohio from Los Angeles for the funeral, Charlie is miffed to find that although he will receive a vintage Buick from his fathers estate, he isnt getting a cent of the three-million-dollar fortune. Instead, Charlie finds that the money has been left to the caretakers of his institutionalized autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Once he gets over the shock of the existence of a brother of whom he seems to have no recollection, Charlie kidnaps Raymond and heads cross-country in the Buick in an attempt to get a cut of the inheritance to pay off some of his failing deals. However, during their adventure, Charlie not only learns how to deal with Raymonds many idiosyncrasies, but he also actually begins to care about his older brother, surprising even himself with his ability to love and his realization that money isnt necessarily the most important thing. Barry Levinson directs Ron Bass's script with impeccable timing and a wonderful sense of humor.

Rain Man is the kind of touching drama that Oscars are made for--and, sure enough, the film took Academy honors for best picture, director, screenplay, and actor (Dustin Hoffman) in 1988. Hoffman plays Raymond, an autistic savant whose late father has left him $3 million in a trust. This gets the attention of his materialistic younger brother, a hot-shot LA car dealer named Charlie (Tom Cruise) who wasn't even aware of Raymond's existence until he read his estranged father's will. Charlie picks up Raymond and takes him on a cross-country journey that becomes a voyage of discovery for Charlie, and, perhaps, for Raymond, too. Rain Man will either captivate you or irritate you (Raymond's sputtering of repetitious phrases is enough to drive anyone crazy), but it is obviously a labor of love for those involved. Hoffman had been attached to the film for many years, as various directors and writers came and went, but his persistence eventually paid off--kind of like Raymond in Las Vegas. Look for director Barry Levinson in a cameo as a psychiatrist near the end of the film. --Jim Emerson

Perfectly Cast and Perfectly Told2010-03-205 / 5
Despite being somewhat of a drama film Rain Man is one of the most entertaining films of all time. Tom Cruise plays the roll of a hot-headed salesman perfectly and Dustin Hoffman is outstanding as the autistic brother he never knew he had. When Tom Cruise's character learns his dead father left 3 million to his brother who happens to be in a mental intsitutuion, he does the only logical thing by basically kidnapping him in hopes of being able to reach a deal with the hospital. His brother turns out to be tougher to handle than he thought which pushes him over the edge. However his brother does possess some unique abilities that he must take advantage of before he learns how much he has come to care for his brother. Rain Man successfully combines hunmor and drama and is a meaningful experience. The effects of Cruise's character's poor relationship with his father is portrayed well, and this type of relationship betweeen fathers and sons is all to common in real life. The ending of the film is also well done as it does not turn out to be as predictable as you might think.

Charles Sanford "Charlie" Babbit is a self-centered Los Angeles-based automobile dealer/hustler/bookie who is at war with his own life. Charlie, as a young teenager, used his father's 1948 Buick convertible without permission and as a result, he went to jail for two days on account that his father reported it stolen. It is then that Charlie learns that his estranged father died and left him from his last will and testament a huge bed of roses and the car while the remainder will of $3 Million goes into a trust fund to be distributed to someone. Charlie seemed pretty angry by this and decides to look into this matter. It seems as if that someone is Raymond, Charlie's unknown brother, an autistic savant who lives in a world of his own, resides at the Walbrook Institute. Charlie then kidnaps Raymond and decides to take him on a lust for life trip to the west coast as a threat to get the $3 Million inheritance. Raymond's acts and nagging, including repeated talks of "Abbott & Costello", "Four minutes till Wapner" and refusal to fly on an airline except Quantas drives Charlie insane, and out of his selfish world into a cross-country trek of pure love and understanding that these two both have. Dustin Hoffman's performance as Raymond Babbitt is, bar none in this movie. Trying to put the reason that "Rain Man" is so great into words is simply impossible. It's got everything. Watch it, enjoy it.
Rain Man.2010-02-015 / 5
Rain Man is a very touching movie, Dustin Hoffman does a great job as do tom Cruise. The movie being a Man(Cruise) Who is thinking he is going to inherit some money from his father, well that doesn't happen as he didn't know he had a Brother(Raymond aka Rain Man portrayed by Hoffman). At first he *Cruise* is very verbally abusive to his Big Brother Raymond who is autistic yet Brilliant. So he kidnaps his Brother Raymond to blackmail and get "His Share" of the 3 million left for raymond..Anyhow, you have to see the movie. The Movie Features A Beautiful 49' Yellow Buick Roadmaster Roadster in most of the movie, and In the beginning we learn Cruise' Character is an Importer For Lamborghini. So pretty cool Countachs briefly shown. The Irony is Cruise in Real Life later on belittles Others who see doctors for their problems, because of his wacky sciencetology beliefs. Which I believe was his Downfall. A Once Good Actor maybe annoying, became representative of all that hollywood believes in, Crazy stuff.

One of my favorite movies.....Great performances by Dustin Hoffman, who plays Raymond,a servant with a gift for numbers, and his brother,Charlie,Tom Cruise.....Charlie finds out after 30 years that he has a special brother who is in a home caring for his special needs. He desides to "kidnap"Rayond to get to know him better. The movie shows the very special challenges this creates for Charlie, and the special bond that is created when Charlie finally finds what a very wonderful person Raymond is.Hollywood at it's best....Very unusual in light of some of their recent efforts....example(2012-the movie)UGH!!!!
