There's really been only one rival to James Bond: Derek Flint. That's because of James Coburn's special brand of American cool. He's so cool, in fact, that he doesn't care to save the world. That is, until he's personally threatened. He's a true libertarian, with more gadgets and girls than Bond, but with none of his stress or responsibility. In Our Man Flint (1966), he's totally unflappable as he thwarts mad scientists who control the weather--and an island of pleasure drones. Lee J. Cobb costars as Flint's flustered superior, and Edward Mulhare plays a British nemesis with snob appeal. For fans of Austin Powers, incidentally, the funny-sounding phone comes from the Flint films. However, the best gadget remains the watch that enables Flint to feign death. There's a great Jerry Goldsmith score, too.

There was bound to be a Flint sequel, and In Like Flint (1967) delivers the same kind of zany fun as its predecessor. Flint is recruited once again by Lee J. Cobb to be the government's top secret agent, this time to solve a mishap involving the President. Turns out, the Chief Executive has been replaced by an evil duplicate. The new plan for world domination involves feminine aggression, and Flint, with his overpowering charisma, is just the man to turn the hostile forces around. In Like Flint is still over the top, but some of the novelty has worn off, and it doesn't have quite the same edge as the original. Even Jerry Goldsmith's score is a bit more subdued. But the film still has James Coburn and that funny phone. --Bill Desowitz

Both Movies are Terrific, But The Sequel Has Jean Hale...2008-12-305 / 5
The reviews that pan these two movies fail to grasp the point that they are supposed to SPOOF the serious plots and action of the Bond movies--not actually "compete with them" (as Flint himself might say). I love them both, but my preference is for the sequel--which I find has a quicker pace and better cinematography. Most of all, "In Like Flint" has Jean Hale, as gorgeous an example of 1960s feminine pulchritude as you'll find in any motion pictture. I recommend the purchase of this film duo for the sequel's first five minutes alone, which features an absolutely wonderful vision of Ms. Hale in a white midriff, form-fitting white pants, and finally a white jacket. Guys: stifle the urge to drool. Bond girls: eat your heart out. Dabney Coleman: what were you thinking?

Created from scratch as America's James Bond, Derek Flint was a supa-dupa agent called on by the American government when faced with a world threatening situation. Versed in karate, meditation and even the ability to stop his heart beating for minutes on end, Flint was in the Matt Helm mould of spoof agent, only a tad more sophisticated and boasting a better actor.

James Coburn , who had made his name as one of the Magnificent Seven and just missed out on A Fistful of Dollars, found his usual image being overhauled as the tuxedo clad, light witted, world class adventurer.

Flint, apparently, inhabits the same universe as James Bond, as implied in a bar room brawl scene in which Flint exchanges information with a unnamed Bond like agent while the pair pretend to fight and even mention SPECTRE as the suspects behind a plan to control the world's weather. Amazing that EON's lawyers were not straight onto this.

A second film followed soon followed. In Like Flint punned the old headline In Like Flynn (referring to Errol Flynn's reputed sexual prowess) but the film itself was less novel, being another rip off You Only Live Twice with some tired hangovers from the first movie and silly gags that could be seen coming a mile off. Non the less, a third film was announced in 1969 under the title F For Flint. It never materialised. Just as well, really.

Unlike the largely forgotten Matt Helm, Derek Flint has attained his own place in in nostalgia for 1960s pop culture. His appearance on the Our Man Flint movie poster; evening suit, gun in one hand, cocktail glass in the other has become part of sixties cinema iconography. Strange how the poster ( and a blatant copy cat of Bond's image at that) has become more famous than the film itself.

If you enjoy a James Bond you'll enjoy James Coburn. He has his own unique way of being a hero. A lot of people do not know this but he studied martial arts under Bruce Lee.

James Coburn is one of my favorite actors since I was a kid and the Flint movies are my favorite.
