| French horror | 2008-11-10 | 3 / 5 |
| I've only seen 2 French horror films so far."High Tension" and "Frontiers".I liked them both. The way they're filmed make them feel bleak and full of despair. They bring me down. But it works for these movies, adding a sense of abandonment, hopelessness and dark, gloomy atmosphere. The movie is in French with English subtitles,so you have to read the whole film.I didn't mind.
When I got this movie,I thought it would be typical of other movies of this type. You know...redneck,inbred,psycho hillbillies living in isolated rural area, molesting and killing(or killing and molesting)unsuspecting passersby.I was waaaay off.No redneck, inbred, psycho hillbillies here.No sir.In "Frontiers" we have an isolated, rural inn proudly owned and operated by local inbred, psycho NAZI CANNIBALS who molest, kill and EAT unsuspecting passersby. That is if you're lucky enough to be a guy.If you're a woman, you run the risk of being considered breeding stock for this cannibalistic brady bunch. This movie is 1 cup "Texas Chainsaw Massacre",2 tablespoons "Hostel" with just a pinch of "The Descent" for a little added claustrophobic terror.
The short story....A group of criminal minded friends must split-up to escape the cops. They agree to rendezvous at nazi cannibal bed and breakfast(it had a 4 star rating)located in desolate, rural area.2 of them arrive early and are treated to complementary dinner, nazi prostitutes and bloody knife wounds before managing a temporary escape.Other part of group,Yasmine and her ex-boyfriend,arrive.Nazi cannibal prostitute sisters kindly offer to take them to their impending torture and death(they word it differently though)at the old homestead, where their friends are supposed to be waiting for them.(Travel guide advice:Never trust local inbred, psycho, nazi cannibal bed and breakfast owners. They like to take advantage of out of towners.)There they meet the rest of the family. They are welcomed with open arms and as according to local inbred, psycho, nazi cannibal customs, they are also beaten, shackled and thrown in a hog pen.Yasmine gets a sponge bath.Various tortures and deaths are visited upon our weary travelers. With the exception of a cool looking achilles tendon snipping scene, all of the blood and gore stuff is pretty typical of what you would expect in this kind of movie. You have 2 nazi cannibal brothers fighting for leadership of the family. Also there are the deformed, cast off children dwelling in the caves and tunnels beneath the nazi cannibal love shack.
What stands out here for me is the character of Eva,played by Maud Forget. She is the pregnant, nazi cannibal baby factory who was abducted years ago and used to bring new blood into the family. She is amazing in this role. She manages to play sympathetic nice and homicidal creepy at the same time.Best part of the film. |
| Takes up Where Hostel Left Off | 2008-10-30 | 4 / 5 |
| | If you thought Hostel was scary, or over the top, wait until you see THIS! It goes beyond Hostel (or Hostel II). A bit slow at first, the action picks up in the middle and never stops. Only for those with a strong stomach. |
| Horror the way it oughtta be | 2008-10-10 | 5 / 5 |
| I've loved horror films since I was 5 (that's going on 50 years now), and this film has the cold-fingers-grabbing-your-gut effect that is sadly missing from so many contemporary horror films. And I'm not talking about torture or sadism; though our villains are not very nice people, this film does not engage in the pleasure-in-cruelty that makes certain films (like Audition) unwatchable to me. It's certainly gory, but it's authentic, thoughtful and believable horror, with characters who aren't cyphers. If this is typical of French work, I'm definitely going to be seeing more French horror films.
Ms. Testa out-Jolies Angelina Jolie in her beautiful-yet-grittily-real depiction of Yasmin, the fugitive who is the film's protagonist. With her beautiful and vulnerable face and Gallic passion of her character, Testa is amazing in what may well be the most physically demanding role I've ever seen an actress play. You have to see the film. It's not that she does a lot of stunt work, though there is enough of that. But you can feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins during this film and that's what makes her so effective.
There is also legitimate creepiness in the pregnant daughter of the house, who is mad past all help and who tries to "help" Yasmin understand the family's plans for her.
If you like horror films, this is quite an effective one.

| Not the best French Horror | 2008-10-08 | 3 / 5 |
| | But not bad either. I just didn't understand the whole Nazi angle to this movie. It did nothing to add to the movie, and perhaps made it seem more like a farce. It would have been better without it, in my opinion. It's Still worth a view if you like gory French Horror though. |
| Frontier(s) | 2008-10-06 | 5 / 5 |
| | This horror movie stuck to the horror genre. The French totally knows how to make movies. If you are a true horror fan you will love this movie. Although it is subtitled, after a while you don't even think about it. The action and suspense carries the movie. Again, I suggest this movie to anyone that is a true horror fan. If not, DO NOT get this movie. Very graphic and violent. |
