The story of a military man who captured over 100 germans singlehandedly in wwi. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 11/07/2006 Starring: Gary Cooper Joan Leslie Run time: 134 minutes Rating: Nr
Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking.

Loosely based on fact about Alvin York, the Tennessee troublemaker turned religious disciple after getting struck by lightning (really didn't happen, but hey...makes great story!). Entranced by the young 'Miss Gracie', Alvin decides he must marry the girl and be a proper farmer with bottom land to grow his crops. York proves his marksmenship using old cap and ball muskets during a turkey shoot to help get the money to buy the land. But fate once again denies Alvin his desires.
Avid follower of the Bible, York reluctantly goes into the army after being drafted because "War is killin' an Ahm against killin!". Only after being handed a book on American History by his Commanding officer does York realise the seriousness of this overall, and goes to France to fight.
The story then takes more actual facts based on actual events, showing York in action against the Germans, using his Tennessee woodsmen talents to pick off and shoot the Germans "Just like huntin' Turkeys". Whats more impressive is York's solo capture of 124 Germans, thus earning him a Congressional Medal of Honor.
Gary Cooper did a fine job portraying York, even had the real Alvin York coach him during the filming. With an all star cast, you can't go wrong. Child Stars such as Dickie Moore ("Ma wants ya Alvin....Ma wants yah!")and June Lockhart portray York's younger siblings, Walter Brennon plays Pastor Pyle wonderfully, guilding the confused York in tough times.
A classic film that earned Cooper the Oscar. This is a film that should never be remade, its a classic from the start. |

| I love this movie and my family including my 13 year old daugher loves it!! We even quote from the movie, what an awesome Tennessee hero!! If you are ever around Tennessee, visit his home and town in Pall Mall. We have had the priviledge of visiting. My dad even went to school with his grandson!! great history lesson. |

| This is without a doubt one of the top five movies of all time. The acting is superb and the movie keeps you interested through out. Gary Cooper is brilliant, but the actress who plays Mother York, Margaret Wycherly, steals the show. I have seen this movie several times in my lifetime and I become deeply engrossed everytime I watch it. This is one of the best bargains ($10.99) you will ever find for a DVD. The second DVD, Sergeant York: An American Hero is also outstanding as well. This is definitely a must see movie. They definitely don't make movies like tis one in this day and age. |
